Galaxy Nails

If you hadn’t noticed, galaxy nails are all the rage. There’s something really quite magical about having the universe painted on your fingertips, so we’ve put together a simple step-by-step guide for you to get the look yourself from home.

1) Get your galaxy nails tools ready

To achieve the galaxy nails effect, you will need to have access to the following items:

  • Damp Makeup Sponge, which has been ripped in half to have an uneven edge
  • Colour pallet or shiny surface to prepare your gel polishes
  • Thicker detail brush, such as the Striper Nail Art Brush
  • Marbling and Dotting Tool
  • LED Nail Lamp

2) Prepare your nails

Before getting started with your galaxy nails manicure, it is important to prepare the nails properly. Firstly, wash and dry your hands thoroughly. Using the slanted side of a manicure stick, push back the cuticles to give the gel polish a nice clean surface to stick to. If your cuticles are tricky to push back, you can always soak them in warm water for a few minutes to soften them.

Now it’s time to shape your nails. If you’re struggling to work out the best shape for your hands, have a read of our Nail Shapes blog post for some top tips. The most important thing to remember is to file the nail in one direction, rather than moving the file back and forth in a seesaw motion. This will give your nails a nice smooth tip and avoid a jagged edge.

Once you have finished filing, buff your nails to give them a dull look - this allows for better adhesion of the gel polish. Finally, give your hands a quick dust or re-wash and dry thoroughly. If you are using StripGel Peel Off Basecoat apply this and air-dry before you begin your manicure.

3) Apply a base coat and first layer of colour

Apply a layer of SensatioNail Gel Base and cure. Then apply a layer of black Midnight Rendezvous and cure. This will become the canvas to which you will apply your galaxy nails starry sky.

4) Apply bright colours with the sponge

Select a white gel polish along with three of your favourite shades, to create the milky way effect. We recommend using bright shades, such as Pink Hibis-Kiss, Island Oasis and Never Tell a Lilac. Put blobs of the four colours onto your pallet, and start by applying a little of the white polish to your sponge. Apply the colour all over the nail in whatever pattern you like, making sure that it’s not too saturated - you can always use the clean side of the sponge to remove any excess. Start sponging on your other three colours in a similar way, not worrying too much about how it looks this stage and allowing the colours to gradually build up.

5) Add some (magic) chrome dust

Select two of your favourite Chrome Nail Powders. Using a nail art brush dab a little of the powder onto each nail, highlighting them and adding dimension. Again, start with sparse application and gradually build up the colour.

5) Draw on the stars

Using your dotting tool, add a few white dots to each of your nails. Then go back and add one or two starbursts to each nail, starting in the middle and moving out to the four corners of the star. Remember, sometimes less is more and every nail can be different. Just play around and have fun!

6) Top coat, cure and share

Finally, apply a layer of top coat and cure. We’d love to see what your galaxy nails look like, here's one our manicurist Sarah did earlier:
