Polish To Gel Frequently Asked Questions

The product

Is polish to gel for home use or professional use?

Polish to gel is designed for use at home - as all SensatioNail products are, although many professional nail technicians do use SensatioNail products as they are salon-quality products.

Can you really use any polish?

Yes – we have tested with over 40 brands including glitter, neon, holographic and colour changing polishes.

Can I use standard SensatioNail polishes with my Polish to Gel Kit?

Yes you can – see our full range of gel polish colours here. You can also mix the two, apply a polish to gel colour followed by a SensatioNail Glitter polish – or vice versa

Application and Removal

How do I remove polish to gel?

There are two ways to remove polish to gel

Method 1: The wrap method.

  • 1. Using SensatioNail foil removal wraps or home-made wraps, soak removal pads in removal liquid or 100% acetone.
  • 2. Place in the foil wrap for 10 minutes and then remove the gel polish gently using the SensatioNail remover tool or a cuticle stick. Remember to start at the cuticle end of the nail - pushing away from the nail and not towards the hand.

Method 2: The bowl method.

  • 1. Fill a bowl with SensatioNail gel polish remover liquid or 100% acetone and place this bowl in a larger bowl of hot (not boiling) water.
  • 2. Soak nails for 10 to 15 minutes and then remove with the Removal tool or a cuticle stick once the polish has softened. SensatioNail Removal kits are available to purchase online and include everything you need to remove gel nail polish at home. Top ups can be purchased in the Gel Nail Essentials shop on our website. Remember - never pick off your nail polish as it can damage the nail - making it thinner and weaker.

Alternatively, use peel off nail shields for quick and easy removal once you’re done with your colour. With these you just file the nail edge (where you capped, to break the seal) then soak in warm water for 5-10 minutes and peel off.

Can I use normal nail polish remover with polish to gel?

No. Because gel polish is a different compound to normal polish, you won’t be able to remove it with regular nail polish remover. Use 100% acetone or SensatioNail removal fluid.

How long does it take to mix the polish?

Only a few seconds. Simply add a few drops of polish and transformer equally into the mixing pot and mix with the brush. The pot can be cleaned with nail polish remover. Even easier – line with clingfilm or mix on foil and throw away afterwards!

How many drops of polish and transformer do I need to mix to do 10 nails?

It depends how long your nails are but around 6 drops of polish mixed with 6 drops of transformer should be enough to do two hands.

How long will the manicure last?

Up to 10 days!

What can I do to prevent chipping?

  • Make sure nails are clean and dry before applying your polish.
  • Wash your hands and nails after you remove your usual nail polish.
  • File your nails and push your cuticles back, then make sure you lightly buff the whole nail just to remove any shine).
  • Cleanse to remove any dust with cleanser on a lint free wipe before you apply the Gel Polish. (Only use SensatioNail™ Gel Cleanser to cleanse your nails, not SensatioNail Gel Nail Polish Remover, acetone or alcohol)
  • Do not use hand cream before your manicure and avoid prolonged periods in hot water immediately after completing a manicure. (Have your bath and wash the dishes before!)

Can I use polish to gel with nail shields?

Yes. Nail shields can be used with any normal polish or gel polish so they are perfect for use with polish to gel transformer.

Do I need to use Primer?

Primer helps the polish adhere to your nails and last longer. You can flex how you use it though depending on your personal nail chemistry – see our guide here

Do I need to use Base Coat?

You can go without, but a base coat will mean your manicure lasts longer and helps your colour go on smoothly. Also, if you are using a dark polish or one you know can stain, a base coat will help prevent this.

What is the best way to apply polish to avoid hitting my cuticles?

See our guide here

Does the mixing method last longer than the top coat method?

No, but it is a lot quicker as you don’t need to wait for your polish to dry.

How dry does my polish need to be if I want to use the topcoat method?

Completely! If it is just ‘touch-dry’ it won’t work. It needs to be at the stage where it won’t dent if you press a fingernail into it, so for most polishes, 30-40 minutes.

Can I use the top coat method a day or so after I have painted my nails with normal polish?

Yes, just buff very lightly, wipe with cleanser and apply top coat, capping the edges.

Which brush should I use to apply the polish to gel mixture?

Always use your regular polish brush and clean with cleanser on a wipe prior to putting back in the bottle. Alternatively use a separate nail brush, we have our nail brushes available to buy here.

How many manicures will I get out of the small and large bottles of transformer?

Around 15 out of the small and 30 out of the large

How long is the dry time?

Dry time with the new SensatioNail LED lamp is just 30 seconds for colour and 15 seconds for base and top coats.

Do I have to use the LED lamp?

Yes, the polish won’t cure without the lamp and you’ll be left with wet, sticky nails. It is essential that you do not touch or cleanse the nails until the very end when you have cured your top coat, when you cleanse you remove the final tacky layer to reveal your completely dry and glossy nails.

Can I use a UV lamp?

You can, but will need to experiment with timings. UV lamps usually take 3 minutes to cure colour and 2 minutes for top/base coats.

Will polish to gel work with both the old and new SensatioNail lamps?

Yes, both lamps will work perfectly well with polish to gel transformer. The new gel nail lamp has a quicker dry time, removable bottom plate for pedicures and a USB charger as well as mains charger. If using the old lamp, you need 60 seconds for your mixed colour and 30 seconds for base/top coat.

Can I mix multiple colours with the transformer at once?

Absolutely, just keep to the total ratio of half polish & half transformer

Can I use the standard SensatioNail top & base coat as my top and base instead of using the Polish to gel Transformer?

Yes you can
